My opinion is that the X carries a negative connotation- something you are ridding yourself of EX wife, EX communicated, etc. I know those are not real strong arguments, but I don't like the X-mas thing either. CHRIST is 6 letters- not a big deal to just write them out, but this is the age of quick and easy- so do what ya want, I like CHRISTMAS.

I agree with you in short. (in long I know about the Greek terminology so am not too bothered) But when I went into my daughters school the other day and saw "Xmas" on a display I thought that was wrong and that they should be using "Christmas". However they would probably say that they know about the Greek terminology as they are a Roman Catholic school.
Oh, it's also a Birthday day of course. My daughters! She enjoys the privilege of sharing her birthday with such an important person.

Well, it depends what context you mean in. As I'm sure you know X=Christ if I were to answer a question on here quickly about Christmas, I'd use Xmas. I have a mate called Christina, when I text her I call her Xtina and in Ethics, when taking notes, I use "Xtians believe" so I don't miss out on anything. Um yeah, I digress. It doesn't annoy me in certain contexts, but if I saw like, an "Xmas Hymn Book" that would really annoy me. Good Q.

Better get used to it. With the text message mentality that's permeating our written language, any abbreviation stands to get more use, not less. Just a sample look as Yahoo!answers messages (questions and answers) provide a clue on how much more of a role abbreviations and short cuts will play in future written language.

Sad. I think it will kill what eloquence was left in the written language.

Your only hope is to start up an emoticon for Christmas that will be acceptable to all, and that has more appeal to the text-challenged than the abbreviation.

It does not annoy me, and it has other history. During the time[s] in history that Christians, and Christian sects were persecuted for their beliefs, the word Christ was often substituted for code words and letters, so others would not know that illegal religious services were going on. X was one of those letters. We are remembering our history, as well as celebrating the customs of others.
I have a devout Christian friend who believes as you do, and she has told me she believes that it is more than disrepectful to use "Xmas". I do not use it around her. I can respect her beliefs, I do not have to agree with them. It is a public forum. People will use it.

If you write Xmas your are taking the Christ out of Christmas. i think that it should be the traditional way - after all that's what Christmas is supposed to be about.

I don't mind Xmas, but I do think that it is too early to be mentioning either - at least wait until the beginning of December.

This abbreviation for Christmas is of Greek origin. The word for Christ in Greek is Xristos. During the 16th century, Europeans began using the first initial of Christ's name, "X" in place of the word Christ in Christmas as a shorthand form of the word. Although the early Christians understood that X stood for Christ's name, later Christians who did not understand the Greek language mistook "Xmas" as a sign of disrespect.

But yeah it annoys me too!

xmas is just another day, except at time and a half. Other than that, it sucks. Traffic, crowds, stupid xmas music, dumb xmas lights all over the neighborhood...
