I wrote this to a girl who had the problem: (just eliminate the birth control pill part for you):::::
Acne is NOT a reflection of how you take care of yourself, that girl above is sooooo wrong. It probably just went away for her over time by itself. ( I'm in the medical field). You can't eat stuff that will make it better either (water is not the solution but it's good for your skin overall). Stress and hormones are the causes. DO NOT BUY PROACTIVE: it has the same exact ingredients that many of the over the counter products have: the main one is Benzoyl Peroxide and there is a good product at stores called "Acne Free", it often comes in a box of 3 solutions (it has lower % of benzoyl peroxide like Proactive but much cheaper). Many over the counter stuff contains benzoyl peroxide and people are really gullible to believe that the brand "proactive" is some special potion. It just has great marketing and it is way over priced (people fall right into celebrity endorsed anything) You need to see a dermatologist and he will probably prescribe Minocycline ( a cheap generic antibiotic you would take morning and night or whatever he says). You will probably also need Tazorac cream and Retin A micro, and maybe Duac gel or Clindamycin (these are presciptions only from pharmacy). You can also use Salicylic acid that is sold at stores, I use "clean and clear acne wash" it's a foam in a purple bottle. These things may dry out your skin but you can use an oil free lotion (one of then also has a small percentage of salicylic acid: it's also "clean and clear". Also change your pillow case more often than usual and make sure the oil from your hair doesn't get on your face and make sure your phone doesn't touch your face much also.
Also I don't know how old you are but when I started breaking out the birth control pill Ortho tri cyclin (it binds some hormone so it decreases it) really really helped because it levels out your hormones (and also makes your period lighter and less painful). You should explore that with your gyn doctor and make sure that your mom knows that it's for your skin.
DO NOT use an exfoliator!!!! this is very irritating (maybe fine for clear skin BUT it will damage your skin more by causing little breaks in the skin and possibly causing scars from any pitting if it breaks apart the zits) and those products above are natural exfoliators anyway, especially the salicylic acid.
Also make sure that if you use makeup it says "non-comodogenic (won't clog pores)" "oil- free". And of course never touch your face unless you are washing it.
Also don't use Murad like that guy said below, it's the exact same ingredients as anything else but if you go to the web site they don't list the ingredients on the first page cause they don't want you to realize this.
But that does remind me, that I didn't mention glycolic acid, I just ordered this one ($27) : http://www.dermstore.com/product_bioglyc...
but I really don't endorse any products online usually.
if you don't have really oily skin then you can use the bioglycolic facial cleanser (also $27): you can go straight to the Jan Marini website :
http://www.janmarini.com/prod_bioglycoli...
Azelaic acid and Mandelic acid is also one you can ask your dermatologist about.
You should use these products consistently but you can alternate too so your skin doesn't dry out too much. (ie: Tazorac is stronger than Retin A so you can alternate these)
I know it's a lot of info but it took me years to know about all these and I figured I save you some time.
good luck
AND .... You will be Fine!! and happy, just be patient!!
