That stufff about Adam and creation - thats the craptastic version...
The Scientific version is something like this: Back in "those days" when man was just beggining to come together into groups, religion served a purpose. It gave man a common bond and beleif system, which assisted in hunter-gatherers into becoming civil and living in society settings. As the populations grew, these early beleif systems also provided the first rules or laws to live by - such as not stealing or killing each other. This is why every culture on earth has religions - but they all differ. If the Christian God was the one true God of Creation, then the rest of the mythologies that exist WOULDNT, would they?
What is important is for man to recognize that religion has served its useful purpose and now should be disposed of, because it is cauing mankind to revert back to stone age beleifs and warfare over who is more right than the other.

I would assume that when they first saw lightning is when they first assumed there was someone up there who was doing it...
This is what gave rise to Zeus etc. Zeus was commonly depicted with a lightning bolt in his hand...
From there, the concept of a god evolved to a single infinite being...
