My 1 year old kitten lately has been obsessed with eating starchy human foods like bread (preferably toast), crackers, and pretzels. At night, she goes and somehow opens the cabinets where those foods are. She'll tear through the plastic and the next morning we'll find the package empty with crumbs all over.
She's been the biggest pig lately, we feed her twice a day according to the cat food label, but she always begs for food when my family is eating. But she's not fat or anything, in fact she and her mom are pretty little cats because they were strays.
Is there some type of "terrible two's" stage she might be going through? Do they continue to grow when they're 1?

Hi there...generally, bread won't hurt, however it's not good for them in the long run as it will not only contribute to bad table manners but obesity since it contains processed carbohydrates which turn into to sugar then stored as fat. Any vet can confirm this fact. Ideally, it's best to offer your cat treats made for especially for cats. Some cats are always hungry regardless of how much they are fed. It is our responsibility to monitor their eating intake to minimize overeating tendencies which can also lead to obesity commonly seen with cats who are free fed, which you are avoiding.
Cats continue to grow up to 12 - 18 months depending on the breed background.

Well, bread is not toxic to cats or anything like that.
According to the Cat Discussions it's okay for cats in moderation to have some bread, but only in moderation.

I wouldn't worry too much about this seeing that cat dry food is made mostly out of wheat. So in essence they are eatting wheat anyway. However, I wouldn't make this a habit giving her bread. It can give her gas seeing she doesn't have the proper enzymes in her stomach to digest the bread properly. But, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I hope this helps.

Cats are adults after the age of 1. I have 3 cats and one of them eats like a horse. Although he doesn't eat everything, he has to check what's on my plate. If he sees me heading towards the kitchen, he runs ahead of me and looks over his shoulder at the same time to make sure I'm still with him. Anyway, your kitten just likes to eat. Eating bread won't hurt. I had a cat that loved spaghetti. He lived for 17 years.

Bread per se won't hurt your cat , but what I do worry about is that she breaks into your cabinets and gets into the packages. If she ingests plastic or paper it will cause problems .
have her checked for parasites just to be sure .
I have three cats and they are on a self feeding schedule . Fresh water and food available 24/ 7 ;
They are not overweight and never steal food .

my one cat is totally in love with bread products. he once ate half a banana nut muffin behind my back (one of those huge ones from the grocery store...). although he i dont allow him too much, if he is a good boy he gets some.
i recently rescued a kitten and he is the same way about bread...and peanut butter. doctor says it is ok as long as any human food is given in moderation
