Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." (Matthew 16:17-19)

The Catholic Church believes the Lord made Simon alone, whom he named Peter, the "rock" of his Church. He gave him the keys of his Church and instituted him shepherd of the whole flock.

Pope Benedick XVI is the senior pastor of 1.1 billion Catholics, the direct successor of Simon Peter.

The entire Mass is a prayer "to" Jesus Christ in response to His command to "Do this in memory of me." The Pope is prayed "for" twice during a Mass.

With love in Christ.

First of all, people rarely kiss the Pope's ring anymore, unless you are really old-fashioned.

As for the mention of the Pope more than God, I don't know what Catholic churches you have been going to, but the churches that I've seen only mention the Pope once during the entire liturgy and God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) a dozen times. The liturgy is all about God; it's God-centric if you will. Catholics believe that the liturgy is the highest form of worshipping God and should not be mentioning the Pope more than it mentions God.

Maybe if you actually went to a Catholic mass you would find it to be completely Jesus-centric. Maybe you shouldn't read so much about what the non-Catholics on Yahoo who try to answer these kinds of questions say. The pope is a religious leader. He is a holy person. He is a good person. He is not more important than Jesus, however. Jesus is the reason for the Catholic religion in the first place. I think you should do a little bit of research.

They do that because they are being misled by their clergymen. They don't know that "Holy Father" is a title that only belongs to God.
