i did this in middle school (wantagh middle school) mine did not break on 3 trials.(it went down the track 3 times) We were given only a certain amount of material and had to work with that. Cardboard is a good material; the impact will not anihilate the cardboard but it is plyable enough to absorb some shock. Cut the cardboard in a isoscoles triangle shape. This shap will cause the front to buckle on impact, absorbing some of the momentum(mass x velocity) and as the cardboard widens toward the backend of the cardboard it gets stronger. This creates a decreasing distribution of the energy rather than a full out thud. (the egg should be in the back of course.) Also on the inside you should make a seatbelt for the egg.(that furry pipe twisting stuff worked awsome for me) or even rubber bands could work. those were the two fundamental safety features on my car for my egg. good luck and try that out.

if you put an egg in a FRESH loaf of bread, i have heard that no matter what height an egg falls, it will not break. the loaf absorbs the impact, and also induces aerodynamic drag limiting the maximum impact velocity

deffinately not rocks. Try something that isn't so dense like cotton balls, or other such soft items. Loaf of bread Idea sounds good. Go with that I say

Put it into a tub of cool whip. No chance it will break then!
