the villar perosa is the mother of the sub machine guns first develop in 1915 by the Italian army , it could fire a 9 mm round.
This gun is the origin of the Beretta 1918. The Germans had there bergmann MP 18 witch was some months prior in production as the Beretta but his development started only in 1916 so the villar perosa was first.
But I must say that the Thompson could had been the fist one hadn't the development been put on hold in 1917.
also famous guns are the grease gun M3, the sten, the MP 40 and the MAS.
present day guns are the Uzi, the Ingram ,H&K and last but certainly not least the FN P90

"Sub" Machine gun means under 45 caliber. Nothing rocks and rolls like the old Thompson with a drum magazine and 100 rounds ready to go down range.......
I have hauled an M2 around. Dismounted from a M113 and carried up a 200 foot hill for an ambush. I want the guy who thinks that is an SMG to do it the next time...

I would say-in my opinion only that a choice of 3 have been history making firearms-the Gattling gun-the Thopmson sub-machine gun, referred to as The Tommy Gun and my choice would be the BAR or
Browning Automatic Rifle.

Heckler&Koch MP5 - Used by SWAT, Seals, and special forces around the world. "the submachine gun of choice for military and law enforcement agencies worldwide."
This is to say that it is a true submachine gun using short cartridges (i.e. pistol cartridges) instead of rifle rounds like a conventional machine gun.
Ammo:

If you're looking for something with a bigger punch, the MAC-10 has .45 ACP rounds. Ouch.

define "mother"
Oldest? probably the german MP28- "Bergmann"
Most famous? probably the Thompson .45 (of Al Capone fame)
Most widely used? loads of them. MP38 "shmeisser" the russian PPSz, the british Sten- all from WW2
The best today? could be the Heckler MP5, some would say UZI. Everyone has their own favourites

It would be the autoloading pistol. Before they invented the SMG, they just put a big stock on a handgun and put a drum magazine in it. It was essentially a semi auto smg.

If you mean 'mother' as a reference to the first, which all others followed, that would be the Gatlin gun, circa 1800's.
