speakers will make your system sound a lot better then a headunit. not knowing what you have, i would say depending on the unit, it will improve very little if at all.

You can expect some improvement at lower volumes if you purchase a quality head unit due to the fact that a quality head will offer better amplification and frequency control. At higher volumes though your stock speakers can begin to distort and due to the higher amount of current flowing to each speaker you may encounter some ghost noise since most stock lines arent in twisted pair. Also you may want to consider which vehicle you're placing the new unit in as some newer vehicles now use digital feedback and signal processing in the stereo systems. It's best to check with a local dealer or installer as they will know what you need to bypass some of these obstacles

from experience you need some quality speakers to go with that head unit. you might notice a difference without the good speakers but you should do it right to get the proper effect. remember wattage and how many speakers your using plays a big part in sound too

If your factory system doesn't use an amp (like in BOSE systems), then your sound will improve since the new head unit will most likely have more power.

Assuming that your speakers are in good working order you can expect a big difference.
