recommending capping all her front teeth and several back teeth and sedating her for the procedure. i am worried about the sedation and also putting caps on the teeth seems a bit much since she will be loosing those teeth soon anyway. he is also wanting to cap them with silver instead of natural caps. i'm also concerned about treatment from other kids if she has silver caps because kids can be so cruel and she will still have the caps when starting school. i really think maybe a second opinion would not be a bad idea. just need some input on this. thanks

You should definately get a second opinion. I wouldn't do sedation, that's a bit much. And like you said, she is going to be losing those teeth anyway. Before I agreed to that, I'd need a logical answer as to why it's important for her teeth to be capped at such a young age and I'd need to get the same answer from multiple dentists.

Capping the teeth with "silver" (actually, I think it is a different metal) Is not uncommon. It allows the child to bite and chew and maintains proper spacing in the mouth for permanent teeth to come in. It could be 4, 5, or 6 years before some of those permanent teeth come in. My daughter had front teeth capped, no problem with other kids, better than empty spaces for several years. Speak to her PEDIATRICAN also. Be sure the dentists office is very experienced witht the anesthesia and has emergency capabilities. Talk to the dentist in detail and so you can be more comfortable. I am a pediatric nurse, and have some experience with this.

WHAT THE DENTIST WANTS TO DO IS PLACE STAINLESS STEEL CROWNS FOR THESE TEETH. FOR THE FRONT TEETH THEY CAN BE UNSIGHTLY. THERE IS A WAY TO PREPARE THE CROWN TO HAVE A WINDOW SO THAT A TOOTH-COLORED FILLING MAY BE PLACED WITHIN. THE TRUTH IS THAT THIS IS A TIME-CONSUMING PROCEDURE AND THERE ARE FEW DENTISTS WILLING TO SPEND THE TIME AND EFFORT FOR TEETH THAT WILL EVENTUALLY BE LOST. AFTER ALL, THEY ARE BABY TEETH. THE TEETH IN THE BACK WILL REMAIN THEREFOR SEVERAL YEARS, SO IT'S IMPORTANT TO RESTORE THEM BECAUSE EXTRACTING THEM WILL CAUSE ALIGNMENT PROBLEMS TO THE PERMANENT TEETH.
THE SEDATION IS SO THE WORK MAY BE DONE MORE EFFECTIVELY AND EFFICIENTLY.
AS FAR AS OTHER CHILDREN BEING CRUEL, IGNORANCE AMONGST YOUNGSTERS IS A PRIME REASON WHY CRIME IN OUR SOCIETY IS AT IT'S PRESENT STATE. IT ALL STARTS WITH THE KIDS.
HAVE THE TEACHER EXPLAIN TO THE OTHER CHILDREN THAT THE DENTIST THOUGHT THESE TEETH WERE SO SPECIAL THEY NEEDED SILVER COATINGS, ETC.

Does your granddaughter brush her teeth? If this is what the dentist is recommending then your poor granddaughter will be in dentures by the time she is 20 unless some changes are made. If I were you, I would talk to the dentist face to face (I assume you haven't because she is your granddaughter and you have these questions) and ask him these same questions. If your granddaughter's teeth are bad enough to justify the crowns (caps), then silver teeth are better than no teeth.

Get a second opionin. This guy sounds off his nut. Unless her teeth are completely rotted don't even bother listening to him.

For sure, go for another opinion. Sounds way too extreme!
