I lived there in the early eighties and it was great fun, but went back for a visit in 94 and it was horrible.
It's worth a couple of days to go to the city safari park, which is pretty good actually, visit Karen Blixens house out at Karen, and, if you're not a vegetarian, go and have a meal out at the Carnivore Restaurant.
I would suggest you go to Zanzibar instead, which is where I went in the end. It's a lot better than the beaches of Mombasa, has a great history, and is beautiful, rent a motorbike, do the spice tour with Mitu, and go visit the old prison island offshore.
You can fly easily from Nairobi or Mombasa, so you could do a 3 stop tour taking in the best of each, but I think you'll like Zanzibar the best.
