I usually put them straight in to catch the hair and turn them around to catch the hair around the hair that you are pulling back so that it stays. Tuck the bobby pin into other hair so that, basically, it has enough hair to keep it stuck. It also helps to twist your hair a little. If your hair is kind of "dirty" like with hairspray or gel, they'll stay better too

Are you using the "U" shaped type, or the closed type? If your hair is fine, you'll probably need to use the closed type no matter what style you're wearing it up in. Naturally curly/thick hair can usually only hold the "U" shaped ones in if it's in a bun. Straight hair will almost always need the closed kind.

Try all the suggestions and, if they don't work, try glue. There is a variety available at beauty supply stores or try elmer's. My fiend with babyfine hair used Elmer's one Halloween and her hair stayed in place; plus it washed out. DO NOT USE NAIL GLUE!!!
