There is a simple 2 step survival system to shopping with girlfriends.
1) In any situation I always answer with a positive response.
"No your butt looks great" or
"Wow I think that really suits you"
even if my natural response is just "meh... dunno."
2) UNLESS the outfit does look really bad then always say
"I don't think that outfit is very flattering"
Thereby putting the outfit at fault.
Step 2 is obviously optional but if you skip it to ensure you get to dinner on time remember to make space in your diary for:
i) time to return the outfit to the shop
ii) a lengthy arguement
My advice is to NEVER SKIP STEP 2.
There is no other way you can survive shopping otherwise and sometimes that dinner is just going to have to wait.

I once had a g/f who was taking forever to get ready... she was in two minds about a dress she was wearing and said to me "does this dress make my bum look fat?"
I replied... "No darling... its your big fat A R S E that makes your bum look fat, and unless you can change your A R S E... wear the dress you got on!!!!!"
She is not my g/f anymore.
