There are lot of differences. Few of them are as below:

1. Win XP is client OS while Win 2000 comes in both client and server versions.
2. Win XP has more plug and play features than Win 2000

In simple terms Windows 2000 is much like the original Windows 95 and Windows XP is a totally different concept!

Windows XP is newer than 2000, with a revised layout. It's much better than 2000.

The OS. The capabilites. Really, XP was meant to be for home use. Windows 2000 was SUPPOSED to be released only for companies and schools.

Win2000 is outdated and performance wise, win xp is better. Theres lot more you could with win xp, such as networking etc. Win 2000 is hard to troubleshoot and has lesser functionalities.
