I am an adult (23) who has had braces for about 3 months now. I recently noticed what looks like a small (not deep) crack on the surface of one of my front teeth starting from around the area of the braces.

I am unsure about the cracking but it can cause holes to form in the teeth if they are not properly cared for! that means floss and brush after every meal. Plus you are paying for the great smile you will have afterwards, so you need to take care of them. I would call your ortho immediately if you think there is a problem. I just asked and they said that the bracket itself will come off before it harms the tooth. So you must have something stuck or it was there before, but the braces itself will not hurt the teeth unless you are not properly taking care of them! BRUSH AND FLOSS! And keep smiling because it is all worth it!

I don't know about cracking, but my sister-in-law had her doctor "kill" her tooth buy over fastening the braces on it. He applied more pressure than the tooth can tolerate and it killed the tooth by cutting the blood supply to the roots. She didn't lose the tooth but the tooth is discolored now.
