My father is friends with many members of our city's police force (I live in southeast MI). Oftentimes he will come home and ask me "Do you know a kid at school by this name? Oh, because they just got picked up by the police for such and such..." Isn't it illegal for them to tell him specific names, dates, and criminal charges? My boyfriend recently got into some legal trouble, and if the involved officers tell my father, as long as the law is on my side, I fully intend to take the officers to court. Are there privacy laws on my side? Police code? Please help.

Thank you.

If it can be disclosed to the public then it can be talked about. Even if it isn't "public information" there are many reasons why they would talk about case information with people that are not law enforcement. You talk about being in school, are you even 18? If you are not then I don't think you will be taking any officers to court.

Criminal history is a matter of public record. The show cops proves that because they do not need to get the approval of the suspect to put them on TV. Also look into the police report section in your local paper and you will see people who got arrested. The things that most police officers do not dicslose are open incestigations and exact occurrances.

I don't believe they can do that. If the information is in the paper or will be published then they haven't broken the law. However, if that
information is known publically then they are
violating confidentuality laws. Call their supervisor and complain. Or better yet, the D.A.
and the police chief. Now on a side note, if you don't want you name the topic of discussion then
choose better boyfriends.

Talk is talk. As long as they do not disclose what is considered to be "classified" types of information on still open investigations, they can say whatever they want to. One of the "perks" of being in a police family is knowing this kind of stuff.

Since your boyfriend got in trouble, you may want to shortcut anything and TELL YOUR DAD ABOUT IT. Even if he starts to say stuff like "I dont want you to see him anymore" it is much better if he hears it from you first instead. Who knows, depending on what he did, maybe your dad can even help. Trust is a very fragile thing. Build the Trust from your side!

Gossip is frowned upon, but its not illegal to talk to people! Stop hanging out with thugs and focus on creating the life you want. Stop worrying about things you have no control over and will only make more trouble for you! Help yourself! Go to school and get good grades and become and attorney! Than you can really fight injustice.

Absolutley unless it is a minor. If they disclose case info about a minor it can totally but mess up the case and possibly have the charge dropped.

it relatively is not interior the authority of the police to maintain a case public or inner maximum. maximum prosecutions are public record. now and back the sufferers' names at the instant are not disclosed, however the criminal's call is public except it relatively is going to reason the revelation of the names sufferers of incest or different mushy themes.

It is considered unethical to do so, however, criminal justice ethics are more lax on those that break them. A social worker would get fired for disclosing a name; a cop wouldn't even get a slap on the wrist.
