There really aren't any other solutions.
If it's an upper respiratory infection, then you can either let it run it's course, which it may. If you have other cats, they more than likely will become infected with it. Fortunately, most cats who get URI's recover completely if they receive prompt and complete veterinary care. Many cats with URI's are given antibiotics to help ward of secondary bacterial complications. It is important for the owner to watch the cat carefully and step in if needed to ensure the cat is eating and drinking, as URI's may greatly reduce the cat/kitten's ability to smell and taste their food. As a last resort, some breeders have started using the process called "Nebulization" which dispenses medication through the air, where it is inhaled deeply into the afflicted cats' lungs.
You can watch him and hope it goes away on it's own. If not, and it gets worse, then you will have no recourse but to go to the vet and at that point it will cost you a lot more money than if you just went now and nipped any potential problems in the bud.
Good luck, hope he's ok.

Try calling a local vet and explain your situation. They might just prescribe some medicine which isn't too expensive. If you're in a smaller town, veterinary care is generally less expensive than in a city or larger town.
A vet *might* let you make payments. I took my cat to the vet yesterday, and they had a sign up that says "don't ask to charge," yet I saw at least two people come in to make payments on an account. Give it a try. With medicine, your kitty will get better a lot faster.

There is no other solution but to take him to the vet. If he is breathing noisly and won't eat, he is a sick boy. I would suggest that you call your local animal shelter and tell them about your money problem, they may know of a vet that will take payments or do it at a reduced cost.

Go to your local co-op (farm supply store) and get a bottle of penicillin. The people who work there should be able to help you. Get a syringe and draw however much you're supposed to give your cat into it. Again, the workers can tell you. I think it goes by weight. Anyway, have someone hold the cat while you do this, because cats don't like to get shots any more than people do. Pull up the skin on the back of the cat's neck and inject the medicine.

The only thing really you can do without going to the vet is...get some saline nose spray from the drugstore and put it on his nose. Keep the nose cleaned off with warm water on a towel. Once the nose is clean then put a little bit of the spray on his nose so he can breath it in. This should help. But you really do need to try to get him to the vet...

Unfortunately, cats (unlike dogs) do not respond well to may people-grade over-the-counter medications. And if your cat has a respiratory infection, it may get a lot worse -- as in: develop into pneumonia -- if it's left untreated.
If you can't afford a vet, see if the vet will let you make payments, or see if your friends/family can chip in to get it the medical attention it needs. Then when it's well, give the cat to someone who can afford to care for it properly. If you can't afford to care for your pet, you shouldn't have it.

Best thing to do: TAKE HIM TO THE VET! he may have an infection, I wouldn't play around with it! there is not much to do. Either that or have him wait it out and give him lots of water!
