Wash your hair several times with Dawn liquid soap.

This will help strip some of the color out

HA , I did that once only i went from a dark blonde to a light brown... let me ask you this ... you HAVE had your hair professoinaly dies in the last year haven't you . The reason I assume this is with all prosessionals they use bleach in the mixtures some times less then others but still its their. now the problem with this is when you dye over it with a box dye it has drastic results... the only thing you can do is enhance the black and make the best of it. Or go to a profressional and they will STRIP the black out.

If the color you picked was a level 2 or 3 it wont fade as much as you want it to. it will fade a little. Pert shampoo tends to strip hair color. mixing a couple of table spoons of baking soda with shampoo will strip it alittle but it may not look the way you want and it will be drying to the hair. other than that the only way to lighten a color that is too dark is to use hair bleach. GO TO A SALON for that. If it's just alittle too dark the baking soda trick should work. make sure you use lot's of conditioner if you do that and sometimes deep conditioners can make color fade too.

what's so bad about looking a bit goth?

People are stupid to call you a goth and you are stupid to feel offended. But if the dark brown die has a blue tone to it, DO NOT try dying it lighter...it may make your hair a funny colour, like PINK even...and then people will call you a clown....you might want to get some shampoos for brunettes that bring out brown highlights in your hair or bring some of your natural tones out...so your hair looks a little lighter....if that doesn't work....wear a hat :)

Well, this happened to me to, i wanted highlights but i got huge black strips, it was awful! I talked to a hairdresser and really the only thing you can do is get it dyed proffesionally or wait. I had my done at a salon, it was pricey but well worth it, it was quick and my hair looks fine now.when you go to the salon just say you want as close to your original colour as you can get, im sure they'l be able to sort you out.
hope this helped!

what I would do would be to put in high lights on the top and underneath you can also maybe put some red high lights in it as well to make it look good and not a gothy look. I had tryed to dye my hair a red color came out orange i put high lights in and it looks pretty good just remeber not to over do the high lights have someone help you!! good luck

go to a beauty supply store and get a 'reverser' colorant - it will take out the color you put in and bring it back to your normal shade...
