I went in 2003 during the intifada but I never felt un-safe--not for a second.
Israel is awesome--full of history, different cultures and many ethinic backgrounds that makes it special.

We based ourselves in Jerusalem and rented a car to travel all over. I love the desert, south of Jerusalem, En Gedi, Masada and the dead sea.

Then up to the Galilee where it is almost tropical and as a history buff there are treasures everywhere. Tiberias, The Jordon River, Sea of Galilee, Capernum, castle ruins, the places Jesus hung out.

Then up further to the Golan and the amazing vineyards, quaint villages, shopping in 3000 yr old Druze villages, and a wonderful nature reserve.

Cross over to the coast driving along the Mediterranean sea with a stop in Nahariya (to see a friend), on to Haifa and Mt Carmel(Elijahs Cave).
I just love Haifa--next to Jerusalem--Haifa is my number 2 favorite spot. You get to that area and up to Mt Carmel and your in forrests looking down on the sea.

Caesarea and the roman Amphitheater, an ancient sea port--once an spend and entire day searching through the ruins of this site alone.

The mediterranean is warm and there is one beach after another--nice beaches with resturants, water sports and swimming with Dolphins.
Continuing down the coast to Tel Aviv and Jaffa where one can find many museams and see for yourself the place of Jonas and the Whale (Jaffa).

Everywhere the night life is great fun and safe--Israel is all about her young people and they look out for one another.

Last but not Least --Jerusalem, the old city, the wailing wall, the temple mount, the tour of the tunnel under the wall, Yad Vashim, Dome of the Rock, Yehuda street, King David, Mt of Olives, Garden tomb, Church of All nations, museams of all kinds.

The open markets in and out of the Old city--I could go on and on but my answer is already to long.
Suffice it to say--a trip to Israel will chnage your life regardless of religious background or lack of, because it is a place of history--old and new--a place to explore and have an adventure.

I will go back--did not have enough time to go all the way south to Eliat.
Hope you go and enjoy.................

i went on pilgrimage there in 1982. It was just at the end of the civil war there. It was beautiful. I wouldn't be interested in it as a sun holiday. We went to Televiv and the beach and sea is very nice there. Sea of Galilee is lovely to swim in too. Dead sea was a real experience. you come out black because of its salt content. i loved Jerusalem and all its markets. We went to places associated with jesus obviously. There was often a huge change in sea level and altitude between the different places we went to and I had terrible nose bleeds all the time. We went in August and it was very hot. I don't know why you want to go -pilgrimage or sun. I don't think I would go there for either now, but good luck.

I lived and worked in Haifa for nearly a year and loved the country and the people. I just pray for peace with their neighbours
for the sake of all the middle east citizens no matter what country they are in. We all breath the same air.
