Doesn't anyone else think they're a nuisance?... this week alone I have nearly collided with a cyclist twice whilst walking to work..

Just the ones that think they get a whole lane to themselves, like they own the road. Then they won't stop for the stop signs.
How does that work?

Think of it this way. They are as annoying as a car is to a truck driver.
Depending of how smart you are, (like the truck driver) it is common to believe you are as big as the vehicle you are driving, therefore, believing that the smaller vehicle have less rights to the road as you (Bully syndrome). Bikes are legal vehicles in most states and have the same rights and rules than the rest of the vehicles.

Same happens to the cyclist that wants the pedestrian to get out of his/her way.

Is not so much the vehicle what annoys us.

It is an alternative mode of transportation. If more people used it the air would be cleaner, we would not be supporting terrorist countries by buying their oil and there sure would be less of a weight problem. So no they don't tick me off, they should be applauded. Maybe you need to be more observant.
