Because Paul said that he met Jesus on the road and was anointed with the Holy Spirit by him.
You should have faith and trust a man who used to hunt down Christians for Rome, he has no reason to lie!

I have always wondered that myself! Paul is not my favorite person in the Bible, that's for sure.
