Neither for about 8 months or so. One will become the next BetaMax, maybe even both as there are also other technologies in the pipeline. The only reason to get one is say if you buy a PS3, you get a Blu built in, buying one for movies right now is a huge gamble.

The answer is neither one yet. Neither has been found to provide the picture quality that each format is capable of with any consistency. Some discs are very good, others not much better than standard DVD. This goes for both formats, but right now HD-DVD is having more success than Blu-ray in providing movies that look good. The recent issue of Widescreen Review has a comprehensive article summarizing the high def DVD situation, and basically the conclusion is "not ready for prime time". Wait. Unless you have to have the latest and don't mind spending money on early versions just to be "first on the block".

If you can wait, it might be in your best interest financially to do

so. If you cannot wait, then at least get a 2nd generation model.

Blu-Ray currently offers the highest resolution HD at 1080p

whereas the HD DVD only offers 720p. That may change soon.

Also, Blu-Ray is also considered to have more bugs that need to

be worked out. I say take one home and see if it works for you

within the return policy.

Blu-ray is better because it is backwards compatible, meaning that is will play both Blu-ray HD DVDs and std. or reg. DVDs.
HD DVD is not.
Also I just read an article saying that nine out of ten of the major studios that produce DVDs are supporting Blu-ray, and only one studio is supporting HD DVD.
Before you choose and buy , go to where you mainly buy your DVDs and see which one has more titles.

Blu-Ray is better, because its technology is so much more advanced. Its just as if you were really watching a football game sitting on the bleechers. Its like the real deal!!

It's not an investment, it is an expense. Investments make money, over time. Expenses, like cars and stereos and tvs and Blu-Rays, only lose value over time.
A house is an investment, a car is an expense.

Blu-Ray is still so new. Be careful it won't turn out like Beta did years ago. Be patient and see what happens.

Wait and see which becomes the standard... Right now Blue -ray may have the inside track but then Beta-max was way better than VHS but never caught on, (most due to the porn industry making tapes in VHS)
