I think it kind of depends on what you eat. If you want to eat before hand (which some people due for fear of passing out or whatever) I suggest a piece of fruit like a banana or apple or something as well as cup of yogurt and/or a bowl of cereal. If I work out during the week, I go to the gym after work and don't eat until I get home. On the weekends, I will have a light breakfast before going. I think that I have read more than once that it doesn't make a difference when you eat, but more of what you eat.

In my personal opinion, exercising before eating works best for me. I usually have a nice meal right after a workout, something to replenish energy and some protein for muscle build-up. I would not eat right before eating, since digestion is a process of its own that requires a little of let alone by itself, at least for some time... Depending on what I eat... I wait at least two hours after a meal.

You don't want to eat a large meal just before working out, but if you're hungry, it wouldn't hurt to have a small, carbohydrate-rich snack like a piece of fruit. After you workout your metabolism remains elevated for about an hour, so that is the perfect time to have a good, healthy meal.

Get your energy for your work-out by eating good an hour before. Make sure and eat right though. Don't go to a buffet! Also, drink water just before working out, but again, don't over-do it. If you work out in the morning, I recommend 2 eggs, a buttered bagel and a glass of low fat milk. Then about 15 minutes before you work out, have a 12 oz bottle of water. And of course, while you work out, have a water bottle and sip away as you work out.

It is better to eat at least several hours before major exercise. McNabb should learn that... maybe he wouldn't vomit on the field so much.
