I started self harming as a way of dealing with something I couldn't cope with!!! I get so depressed and stressed still that I feel I can't cope with anything else. Feeling physical pain is better than feeling emotional pain (I don't feel the pain when I first do it - that comes later), and by taking care of my cuts, I feel I'm taking care of the emotional side of things as well.

I have to emphasize that IT'S NOT ATTENTION SEEKING as I hide my arms/legs. Some people do it to regain some level of control in their lives, others because they are trying to deal with stress, IT'S REALLY AN INDIVIDUAL THING!!!

After I've done it I feel better about myself for a while (that's when I've realised I've done it). Sometimes I'm SO down or stressed that I do it without knowing about it until I see the blood running down. That is when it's more dangerous as I'm not controlling how deep I go!!

Well my best friend used to do that and she did it at first because she had a lot of problems at home (divorce and a death in her family) and she kept doing that as an alternative to "end" her problems. Then, though, she just started doing that to get pleasure out of cutting herself because she statrted to like the pain. So the reasons for doing this varies, but in some ways they always link to depression.

Grant got slammed for saying this, but my friend did it as a cry for help. In her case she got the help she needed and her family are still feeling guilty for not giving her the attention she had so badly needed. She'd felt ignored and had taken the only action she thought would make them react. In her case, it worked. But I know that isn't always the reason.

I had a freind who cut. I asked her one day why. She said it was because the physical pain took away the mental anguish in her life.. even if it was only momentary, it helped her in her own way. She was not seuicidal at all. It's a release for them, or that's what she said. Not really a positive one in the end. Her forams are scared all over from it.

Apparently they find it as some sort of release, if they cut themselves they see their problems draining away with the blood. Some also get a sense of control from it, they feel they can't control what is going on around them but they can control the pain they inflict on themselves.

i do it to release stress and anger. I dont do it as hard now because i almost killed myself and had to have 2 hours surgery to repair my tendons. The last time i done it was so i felt like i had some control over my life as its been hard lately but no-one knows i done it. Alot of people think its for attention but its not.
I cant answer for other people as they probably do it for different reasons

My sister used to be like that...

but she changed and got some help and now she's alright. I think people do it to ease away thier pain inside and focus it on something on the outside. So they hurt themselves.

Or, some people just like the feeling of pain so they inflict pain upon themselves.

This kind of question bothers me cause there is a tinge of not understanding about it. Alot of things happen cause it helps. And that its become a habit.
