How do contemporary Buddhist practices reflect the foundations of the religion?

Insofaras they emphasise the need to focus on right practice and right thought and striving for one's own enlightenment rather than any kind of theology. The symbolism etc. is due to cultural influences but the fundamental teachings of the Buddha are still at the core of the various modern Buddhist philosophies.
