I have been talking to/flirting with this guy and in casual conversation he said "What are friends for" Do you think he was just establishing the tone of the relationship or just talking. In other words to do you think we are just friends, or do you think I should keep my eye open for other indicators?

Men are simple don't analize our words, take them for face value. He was just replying.

So he considers you a friend, isn't that good? The best relationships start out by getting to know each other as a person, instead of getting caught up in the 'romantic' drama which is mostly superficial and fake. If the friendship turns into more, you've actually already got something to build on. And if not, then hopefully you've got a good friend.

I was stressing/wondering about this guy I'd been hanging out with for a month or so... is this just friendly or maybe more?... and we are now officially 'dating' in the last couple weeks. :)

i think there might be hope in the future ;) , at least he likes you enough for friends , keep on flirting and work your way up , don't rush , just flaunt your features and let him know what you've got .
