Take a picture of yourself at your worst. Or look among those recently taken. One where your outfit looks bad or your chin looks double or where you seem to be very flabby.
Make a copy to hang on the refrigerator or other convenient place. Think of it as your "before" picture.
Then start some sensible diet, like not overeating on portion sizes or not finishing the food from your kid's plate or not snacking or not having desserts. Weigh yourself frequently. Write down the number or put it on your computer in a spreadsheet. If you do a spreadsheet you could also put your target weight on there and have EXCEL keep subtracting from your weight so you can see how close you are getting.
When you hit the target take another picture so you can admire the difference. That is your "after" to keep there for inspiration and warning.
Aim for a couple of pounds lost each week.

First of all starving yourself is a very unhealthy way of losing weight. Starving yourself will not make you lose weight. However your body needs energy and it will get it from your muscle. Its not worth it. Eating fruits in vegetables inbetween breakfast, lunch, dinner etc helps. Especially drinking a lot of water can help. Thats what i did. It really helps make you lose weight, and it also makes you feel physically good, which as losing weight by starving yourself wont. And thus isn't as effective sometimes. It is possible to lose SOME weight at the beginning by starving yourself. But in the long run you wont look healthy. In the end its about feeling healthy, and looking healthy, rather than just "looking" thin.

A lot of these answers have great info on them especially the baby steps one. One more thing to try is when you are eating some food that is your weakness at home stand in front of the mirror naked and this will help you mentally. It may be harsh and shocking, but some of us (like myself) need a jolt every once in a while to keep us on the str8 and narrow. Good luck and try it please.

the way i devoted to my weight loss, is i wrote a contract with myself, of things i would do everyday to lose weight. exercises such as, going for a 30min walk every evening. i even wrote a list of foods i would cut from my diet..foods such as fast food, junk food, sodas. i enlisted the help of friends for support, and a few times a week, my friend would join me for my walk.
and keep track along the way. celebrate mile stones, like 10lbs, 20lbs. thats what worked for me...hope this helped...good luck

well if ur anything like me it's hard to committ to a change of lifestyle like that all of sudden. you could go gung ho for a week and then get discouraged. the best idea is to make baby steps- small change. lifestyle change not crash and burn diet. maybe this week you exercise once. maybe you do that for 5 months before you can exercise twice a week. whatever you can commit to, do that. don't bite of more than you can chew. small change
