It is don't take any wooden nickles and it refers to a period of time just after WWI. Because the metal nickle is used in military applications, United States mint ran out of the metal. I order to satusfy the law for printing nickles wooden 5 cent pieces were produced for a short period of time.

People thought it was a joke that the wooden coin was not worth anything hence the saying "Don't take any wooden nickles."
