I am not a very political person, I voted for the first time yesterday.
I am not anti-Bush nor anti-Rep., I just want to know what is winning the war in Iraq, when will Americans know that the war has been won? What particular thing/act says victory?

I think that when the Reps say "winning," they mean having the insurgency (the people who took up arms to get the invaders, I'm sorry, I mean American troops out of their country) to realize that they will never be able to win and will surrender, giving way towards a peaceful (i.e. not violent) condition in Iraq where the Military can train the new military, rebuild the cities, and let the new prime minister enact his new laws, constitution, etc.

They are at a stalemate right now as the insurgents are also waiting for the US military to realize that they will never be able to win and will surrender, giving way for said insurgency to try to take over the prime minister and put one of their guys in power.

This stalemate could be forever (literally: have you heard of the 100-year war?); however, it could end tomorrow if the insurgency can give up. (Which is what the Reps keep hoping for.)

Now that the Reps are no longer controlling, they probably think of their election "losses" as a win. Going to war was a mistake. Now if we "pull out," we admit defeat and leave Iraq to the mercy of the insurgency. But if we stay there, we could be hit with losses and make our sons and brothers kill innocents for years. We never should have gone.

But now that the Reps are out, the ultimate blame for "losing" or staying and dying will fall on the Dems.

I agree with the others, this is not a war that can be won. It was even started for dubious reasons, it was declared after 9/11, but Iraq had nothing to do with it. (Don't get me wrong, Saddam Hussein is an evil man, but it was not the right time or reason). More soldiers and civilians are dead now than actually died in the 9/11 attacks, therefore, there can be no victory, only a successful exit strategy and restoration of peace.

Yes we are fighting the terrorists within Iraw, not Iraqis, but when we toppled Sadam's government we basically put a doormat on Iraq for terrorists to come in. They weren't there to begin with, now we created a breeding ground for them. Keep up the good work Georgie Boy

Not sure, but I would guess that the plan was to empower an Iraqi police force so they could take control of their country, then we back out. Seems to me, that would constitute 'winning the war in Iraq'.

Then there's the war on terror.. whew.. that's a much larger issue. Can you call it winning if all you do is limit the enemy's ability to harm you? Or does it take total annihilation of them all? If so, how do you find and kill them all?

I dunno.. not sure 'winning the war on terror' can be considered any more attainable than to simply protect ourselves from attack on our own soil.

That, as i understand it, was a major consideration in the decision to move into Iraq. The argument is 'better to fight them there than here'.

Winning in Iraq is giving the Iraqi people the time they need to be able to defend themselves.

You seem to forget that the Iraqi people defied death threats to vote for democracy. Think about it - would you have voted if somebody threatened to kill you if you did? They went and defied the terrorists to select how they wanted to govern themselves.

Now everybody is saying that we should turn the people of Iraq over to the terrorists who commit daily massacres.

Lets give them the time they need.

We should admit that we made a mistake getting involved - try to fix what we broke - Retire in good order and try to leave some good feelings behind. Let the government shake itself down into what ever form it ends up and then try to establish relations with what ever it ends up being.

Ive asked this question before, nobody gave me a good answer. Basically, you cant claim victory. You can just try and decide when and how to pull out without collapsing the Iraqi government (could be impossible).

I think the fact is we are in a win less situation/.Who would sign a peace treaty? We are seeing "tribes" of various causes in Iraq-one of them being the elimination of non-Muslims on their soil. !.) we can walk away/ 2.) Just hope the insurgents just go away/

There is no such thing for us. Our people are being killed by the "insurgents" and by our supposed allies as well. Only Halliburton et al are winning with their profiteering.

It is not a war that can be won, it will only escalate and spread.
