is it xp home or pro?
edit:
in response to a below reply
microsoft dont record ip address etc, the just take a hardware profile of your pc. they have a privacy policy which states that the dont take any information which can personally identifiy you!
yes it is wrong to use a code that you have not purchased, but millions of people out there are doing it, (me excluded) but millions are not getting caught.

Don't let any one of the answer given fool you. There is no way even if you did copy down a 25 digit code or obtained one from a crack house, etc. etc. Microsoft, is hard core. And their "WGA", tool that scans your pc to validate your key, also records your hardware an IP #. When you try to install say SP2, they will scan atleast four times to validate that your key is valid. Same for critical updates, Media Player, etc. etc.
Belive me it is impossible. Plus if you reside in the United States you may find yourself in jail. Outside of the U.S.A., they have a real big hatred for Microsoft and really don't make any effort to have you arrested upon the request of Microsoft.
Even if you try to download IE6 or IE7, they will scan X 4 while the program is being downloaded an again while it is being installed. One way or the other they will catch you if your key is not valid.
Best is to purchase from an OEM, a very small item. And then the OEM, company will sell you Windows XP Pro., or Home for around $100.00 or less. (You have to shop around).

this works!
if you are using xp home sp2 and have the disc and no product key , go to currys or pc world etc, and go and look for a pc from hp or compaq, these pcs are mass produced and the code on the box dosent always match the code that it was activated with
anyway quicky note down the code of a display model and use it to activate the product, it works, trust me !!
