We hear the reasons that people seek asylum in the UK, usually because they are discriminated against or threatened because of their ethnicity/sexual orientation/political views. But can a UK citizen who is being discriminated against/threatened in this way claim asylum abroad?

No - as there are no UK laws that persecute people based on race, religion etc, etc. There is no recognised internal cultural problems that could be used as proof that you need asylum. You need proof that the persecution that you face is based on your race, religion, cultural origin and that the authorities are unwilling to intervene for you. Being bullied by gangs (for instance) is a situation that the police should take action on. If you were persecuted and the UK justice system was corrupt then you would have a case to claim asylum.

The people that are claiming asylum in the UK would need to prove that the problems they face are going to happen to them wherever they are in their own country - that the attitude is one that all people in that country hold. And that when they have sought protection from the authorities they have received no protection. If not their application will be turned down and they will be sent home.

YES! You can apply!

But your chances of being accepted are pretty slight. As others have said, you would have to convinve the foreign government you were at risk of torture or execution because of your politics, race, religion, etc, and that the Government would not help you, and that there was nowhere safe you could live in your own country.

You have freedom of movement within the EU anyway.

Interesting to remember that there were hundreds of UK citizens who fled to the Irish Republic as refugees early in the Troubles, when thousands of Catholics were burnt out of their houses by Loyalist militias. They were able to claim dual nationality, so they didn't have to try for asylum - lucky, as they could have been told to relocate in England (actually, many have done just that over the years).

No, because for you to be able to claim asylum, you have to have a good reason that you can be killed if you stay in your country. In the case of UK citizen, as UK is not in civil/international/religious war etc, and no one is in the situation that he/she will be in danger by staying in UK at the moment. So UK citizen is not able to ask for asylum. However, if by any chance UK gets into a war that involves people in UK to be in as difficult situation as some countries in war now, then possibly UK citizen will be able to claim for asylum. Hope that's not gonna happen.

i don't think so as i think there has to be major life threatening things going on in Ur home country. but maybe look into an exchange program. if it even exists. just out of interest where would u rather be? because depending on where u want to go and live, u could quite easily get a work permit for another country. make some enquiries at the country's embassy and then u'll know.

You can try... anyone can! But you will have to proof that your life is threatened by the british authorities, not for law inforcement purpose, but in violation of one of your human wright... I very much doubt you can proove that.... Moreover, most countries will take into account UNHCR view on your original country and its safety: as they now say it is perfectly safe for either Tootsies or Hutus to go back to Rwanda, I, again, doubt they will push very much on your case.
Anyhow, the Vienna convention also includes something that is not asylum as such, but close to it: subsidiary protection, which is not based on political grounds. On that one, in some places, you might have a slight chance... Please, let us know if you succeed, that would be most interresting!

One would think not but there have been cases since the war when this has happened - Kim Philby, Guy Burgess, George Blake etc.
