If the P is a prefix plate (P at the front), then that means the vehicle was registered for road use between 1st August 1996 and 31st July 1997.
If it's a suffix plate (P at the end), then the vehicle was registered between 1st August 1975 and 31st July 1976.
This is assuming, of course, that the P reg is the original registration issued to the vehicle. It's possible to obscure the age of the vehicle by attaching a personalised plate to it.
