Most often, the context of a verse will reveal wha it means. That means we have to look at the verse in context of the verses around it, not just isolate the verse itself and then try to understand it.

19The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
20Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
21Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.
22Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.
23But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
24God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
25The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.
26Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.

Until this time. people use to go to a select spot to worship God much as today many think we have to go to a church to worship Him. In truth. we can and are to worship GOD anyplace and anytime. Worship is an attitude which we can do anywhere. When we see a sunset, we can worship by thanking GOD for not only the sunset, but the ability to see and enjoy it. We worship in truth in that we reconize this sunset did not just happen...that GOD in fact created it.

The greatest act of worship is to accept GOD's payment for our sin. See the link below to see if you have done this.

In order to understand the quote you have to read the whole story about Jesus's conversation with the Samaritan woman. Jesus' remark comes at a point where the lady is trying to turn the conversation away from the fact of her "checkered past", turning it towards the Samaritan/Jewish religious dispute of that period concerning where the proper place to worship was: the temple in Jerusalem or Mount Gerizim in Samaria.

A short non-sectarian answer would be: God is everywhere. It doesn't matter where you "worship" God. And worship is not about rituals and laws. Worship is about loving your neighbor (everybody else) as you love your own self. If one does not love one's neighbor as one's self, one can sing and clap, and pray, and read the Bible until one is blue in the face and it means NOTHING.

The Spirit of truth is Christ, and through the influence and impressions of the Holy Ghost, another Spirit of truth, we may approach and worship God the Father in truth from our inner spirits that are led to Him.

Before we came to this earth we lived as spiritual children of God and worshiped him in the same manner--in spirit and truth. We continue in like fashion in mortality, that through Christ and the revealing of the truth made possible by the Holy Ghost, we worship God in spirit and truth.

Confusing? Perhaps so. But the verse does not mean that God the Father is only a Spirit that fills the immensity of space. He has an immortal, perfected body of flesh and bone. It is the Holy Ghost, the Comforter that Christ promised us, that fills our hearts and minds, giving us the soft feelings and reassurance of the spirit of truth.

As an added note, and in one instance, spirit of truth (as contrasted with spirit of error) is used in the scriptures to signify the influence or persuasive power of truth (as contrasted with the similar meaning of spirit of error). See 1 John 4:6.

It's a response to the fact that worship had grown to be a legalistic set of actions performed by the body. Jesus was telling the Samaritan woman to worship God from the spirit, or the "heart", not go through motions and rituals that had become common.

24God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

Preceding verses: 21Jesus declared, "Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth."

Worship what you do not know, no knowledge of God.

Salvation from the Jews, Jesus lineage.

Time has come, Jesus is not only there, but right before her.

God is a spirit, seeks those to wroship him in spirit, and in truth, having the knowledge. Not complicated once you can break it down a little bit.

It says that God is seeking worshippers who worship him in spirit and in truth.

The word spirit ( pneuma in GreeK) has a connotation of power. In other verses the word "spirit" means intention of the heart.

The word "truth" in the Bible means the totality of God's word. Jesus himself said that God's Word ( written in the Bible ) is truth.

Based on this, John 4:24 means to worship God w/ all our power, w/ all our heart, and in accordance w/ what the Bible says.

The Bible says there is only One Faith, or Truth, Therefore any person that is truely worshipping god has to worship him in the true teachings of his word, & not through some other teachings, Paul said if we or a angel from heaven preach unto you any other gospel, than what we have preached, let them be accursed, They is only ONE TRUE WAY TO WORSHIP GOD, In Spirit ( By the Holy Ghost,) & Truth, By the true Revelation of his word.

Dear Little aci, Here is the read on tht from my Bible concordance, and its truth.
Because Jesus Christ is the truth , to live in union with Christ, requires speaking the truth. To claim to have fellowship with Chrsit and to possess salvation ,yet not to live and speak according to the truth is to be deceived. Those who have no truth in them show the real condition of their hearts, without truth we remain in deception and darkness and thus are outside the kingdom of Heaven. A liar is of the @synagogue of Satan.
Now. all of this has many Bible verses to suppport each thought. Get you a good Bible and a good Bible commentary and see for yourself.
This explains why I and so many others say that ppl who claim to be Christian, yet dont obey God and live as they please, arent of God. they are in deception of the devil.
In many places God tells us that blessings come from obediance, and disobedience brings curse. YOu cant fool God. We can fool others sometimes, but never God. If we say we are Christian, we will obey Him and be glad to. This is why we chritians cry when someone says HOW DID THAT CHRISTIAN DO THAT TERRIBLE THING? Did you ever think that that they arent Christian at all, just trying to fool others and GOd, but it doesnt work. God says we can tell a Christian by how they live. We have certain guidelines and rules that are placed to protect us. If we dont obey them, we arent of God at all, but of the devil Not my words alone. They are Gods.
