Chess is ok for Muslims, the only issue is Islamic law forbids graven images such as a carving of a person.
So their chess sets have different looking pieces than the ones that we use, but the moves are the same.

That is a great site. I had forgot all about backbiting.
§ Question : What is the proper definition of 'backbiting'? Please, give some references from the Quran and Hadith also.
§ Answer : Backbiting means “speaking ill of a believer in their absence with the purpose of disparaging or not, and no matter whether the alleged shortcoming was related to his body, lineage, behaviour, deeds, statements, religion, or life, and other defects which are [usually] concealed from the people. Similarly, it does not matter whether the description was done by words or by gesture.”
This is why it is forbidden to speak out against terrorists.

Playing chess is permissible only if all the following conditions are met:
1- One should not get so absorbed in it that he delays his prayer; chess is well-known to be a stealer of time.
2- There should be no gambling involved.
3- The players should not utter obscenities or vulgarities.
If any of these conditions are not met it should be considered as Haram (forbidden).

Look, Sistani's fatwas mean nothing to a lot of people. I wonder why it is forbidden. Since you play chess with no gambling, then it is not forbidden ...
I think the only case that chess would be forbidden if you use a NUDE QUEEN .... hahahaaaaa

I don't think there's anything wrong with playing chess. It would be wrong if you were gambling or cheating, though.
Have fun!

we do not know the reason behind the forbiddenness of an act, we are bound to obey in absolute obedience. There is a reason for it, but we do not know it and when we do not know it, it does not mean that we should not abide by it.
