Chickens should be planted no less than 3 feet apart and at least 2 feet down. Dig the holes to be twice the size of the chicken and water frequently for the first week.

Chickens like most animals require food and water, but also they require protection from the elements (shelter and heat) and company of other birds. Chickens flock together, but they also have a pecking order. So there will be dominant and submissive chickens and a little fighting. It is recommended to have a minimum of 1 square foot per bird.
