In a nutshell: The more humans who contract the H5N1 virus from poultry, waterfowl animals etc... the more opportunity the virus has to emerge and 'reassort' itself with human genes ultimately resulting in a new pandemic strain which our bodies would initially have no natural defense to. What are your views on this and the current situation?

The gene segments of H5N1 is composed of ribonucleic acid (RNA) not DNA.

The Influenza pandemic of 1918-1919 killed more people than had died in the whole of the Great War.

They were however, mostly Eskimos and other people with little or no immunity to Influenza of any variety. Bear in mind that people travel around the world much more today, and there is likely to be some background immunity. Also we do have a few anti-viral drugs, and once there is actually an outbreak a specific vaccine could be produced relatively quickly - though possibly not quick enough.

Yes, a Pandemic is overdue, but it isn't worth worrying about until it happens

Basically, the H5N1 strain has been around for years and has been contracted by individuals before. It is only in recent months that it has been recognised that the H5N1 strain is the one that has been contracted by human beings. Should bird flu "combine" with human flu, we'd have the same defence against it as with influenza. On the other hand, in the time it would take H5N1 to evolve into a "human virus", we'd also have evolved a defence against it.

The truth is, the will not be a bird flu epidemic. Don't trust the media, especially when it comes to science.

I saw a documentary about his last night. It is very worrying that soon the virus DNA may change to infect people. The goveremts are buying large quantities of anti virus tablets that will help stop the spread while the new DNA is used to create a vaccine.
