I mean really top notch!

The Yardhouse IS delicious, but thats the kind of place I meet friends for drink.

This older guy is taking me out on Friday he said he would take me anywhere I wanted to go, so I want to take advantage and do a little fine dining. I was thinking of the Sky Room at La Valencia, or maybe George's on the Cove, Sea Lodge? All I know are La Jolla restaurants!

Not knowing your taste(s) in food, here are some options:
(and considering you mentioned Yard House)

Peohe's, on the water in Coronado will be a good choice. Great View.

Island Prime, on the water off Harbor Island (take a left at the Sheraton before the airport and keep going left) Great View, Great Food.

If I had to choose among the two, Island Prime has a little bit more of an exciting menu.

I'll second Bertrand at Mister A's, but I also like Tapenade in La Jolla. It's my favorite restaurant in all of San Diego, personally. I thought the food at Island Prime was actually not great at all, though the view is pretty good. Sea Lodge's food isn't much better. I also thought George's at the Cove was highly overrated. Then again, maybe the food and the service suffered since the last time I was there it was Valentine's Day and the place was absolutely PACKED. You could also try Mille Fleurs in Rancho Santa Fe for an expensive dinner. They're very well rated - consistently named one of SD's top restaurants.

Happy eating!

Well according to Food and Wine Magazine, it's Mille Fleurs in Rancho Santa Fe, about 30 miles north, In between Solana Beach and Escondido. I've only been once-it's the best food and atmosphere in my opinion. Maybe I'll go again before I die....

I'm not sure if it's top notch but it's pretty close. The Yardhouse in Downtown just beside PetCo field. YOu have to try the mu-shu rolls and the ahi tuna. Spectacular.

Plenty of places downtown are great, If you really enjoy seafood and sushi go to Osetra's. its named after the fine caviar and its a great place, they have a huge selection of wines and alcohol, they have a tower of wines that a "wine angel" will "fly" up to and get for you, she harnesses herself up and is lifted with metal ropes. really cool. And the food is superb...top quality aged beef, fresh seafood and very attentive service. Its definitely on the pricey side, but wow what a way to impress a date or be impressed by a date, well worth the money. Happy eating!

Donovans (UTC) and Ruth's Chris (Downtown and Del Mar) are two of the better steak houses.

Anthony's is an excellent seafood restaurant on the bay near the Star of India.

Bertrand At Mr. A's is known for their food and their view.

Bon Apetite!

I like Tom Ham's Lighthouse, Chateau Orleans (P.B.), and The Prince of Wales Room at the Hotel Del Mar. If you call to make reservations they will print up matchbooks with your name on them at the Del and the service is UNBELIEVABLE!
