I've deleted the text XXX times, tried to change its save name, and done a repair to the Word program and I can't get the program to open on a blank page. I'll be grateful and thank anyone who can help this silver surfer

In case you're wondering how that condition occurs, it can be caused when you open a document and then save the result as the Normal.dot template. Or you open the Normal template from File => New, add text, and then save the result. The document text becomes integrated with the Normal template.
Just in case you run into this again.

Here is a fix:

Locate the template file Normal.dot and double click on it to open it. It should open Word. If that text appears delete it and exit saving the result as Normal.dot.

Back to add - another more radical way if you're not worried about saving template customizations, is to locate Normal.dot and rename it. When Word next opens it creates a new Normal.dot

If it does that it means that somehow you have saved your document as a template over-riding the default normal template. So, open Word as usual, and before you do anything too drastic, save your essay but make sure you use the Save As icon and save with the name you want, but make sure the file format is .doc (or .docx if 2007) and NOT .tmp. As soon as you know your essay is safe, then delete everything in the document so you have just one blank page, make sure your page margins are as you want, i.e. 2.54cm all round and is set to A4, check that your font and size is as you wish, possibly Times New Roman 12 and then back to Save as icon. When window opens, go straight down to the bottom, click on the file format button, and select template. The window will now show all the templates installed on the computer, double click on normal.dot (or .docx if 2007) so you over-write the one which would appear to be the essay. Click OK - you will get a message about over-writing, say yes, and your new template for blank page is saved. Close the file. Now Ctl N or click on new document icon and you should get blank page as you should by default.

I think what you did was accidentally "saved" a file instead of using "save as" and giving it a name.

If you want this file, open it, then click File, cl Save as, and give it a new name. Now, we will clear the normal template.

Now, Control + A (this will select everything)
press the delete key to clear the page

click Format
cl Font
select the font you use most often
now, on the lower left of the screen, click "default."

You will be asked if you want to change the "normal" template.
click Yes.

Now try opening a new blank document.

Sounds like you have modified your default document.
Find this file
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates\Normal.dot
Double-click the file to open it in word.

Delete all of the stuff that doesn't belong.

Now click "Save As" and save it as Normal.dot in the same folder you found it in.

This could be a problem with your Normal.dot which is the default template.

Close word & office

Look in c: / Documents and settings / / Application Data / Microsoft / Templates

rename it (just in case) to something like normal_backup.dot

then load word, this should re-create your normal.dot
