I have a kitchen aide stand mixer- the head flipper upper one. I love it and use it often, however, it is heavy and you do need somewhere to store it, unless you have the counter space. I use it mainly for baking baked goodies..cakes, cheesecakes, cookies, icing etc. (mmm i'm craving sweets now!!!) I do like that you can purchase other attachements, like the pasta mill and vegetable shredder/slicer, but I really don't get much use of those things. (too much clean up)
Biggest drawback: You need to wash everything, before preparing the next recipe,(ex. cake batter then icing) which can kinda be a pain, but you can purchase an extra bowl ($$cha-ching$$)
After I bought the K.A., I saw that some companies, like sunbeam, started making beater-mixers with the bowl attached- one that you can turn/spin- which kinda piqued my curiousity a little. I believe they are a little cheaper, probably weigh less, and would be a little more functional for other meals. I think that it would be much easier to make whipped potatoes with this kind of machine.
Value, as with anything else, all depends on if your really going to use it. I recommend the kitchen aide because they are a reputable company that has been around for a very long time, and I like it a whole lot for baking. If you use a department store discount coupon, you can sometimes get one inexpensively. Be prepared to pay well over $100.00 for one though.
If your not going to use it that much, just be happy with an electric hand mixer. It's cheaper, lighter, easier to store and clean, and you pretty much can move from one bowl to the next with minimal cleaning in between.
Shoot, now I need to go bake something! Good luck!

I bought a Kitchenaid standing mixer from www.overstock.com it was refurbished and I saved so much money. I've had it now for 7 years and its the best kitchen product I have ever purchased. I love having it when I bake and even use it to mash my potatoes.

I have a kitchen aid stand mixer. I got it at Costco and saved about $60 off what the department stores are asking for them. I have the one where the bowl lifts up to meet the paddle (or any attachment) and I love it. Look for sales at this time of year to save you some money.

Kitchenaid is good. But you have to get one where the top flips back, not the ones where you lift the bowl up to meet the mixer head

Hobart and KitchenAide are the standards to the kitchen. Don't cheap out though, get an upscale model that will really knead the dough!

KitchenAid is the best, I think - esp. when on sale.
