Registered Nurse here; First I'm not a Physician, therefore I cannot suggest Anti-depressant, furthermore over the Internet without a complete history of all your symptoms and medical/mental history, no one should suggest a anti-depressant to you. However, I truly believe there is hope for you, now if you will make an appointment with a mental health clinic, psychiatrist, therapist, or perhaps your primary care physician, you can be helped. Due to the complexity and severity assessing strictly from what you have written. Sounds as if you may need some inpatient therapy. Please don't even entertain the Ideal or thought of suicide, when this comes into your mind, force it out with more positive thoughts. Something lead to your unhappiness, you can be happy again. It's pure speculation here on my part, but perhaps you truly do have a chemical imbalance in your brain. Having said this, sometimes a person needs to try different anti-depressants, many times the patient and physician need to work closely together via trial and error, till that right medication is found for you. Also most anti-depressants don't tale effect immediately, usually it's a 2wk, to 4wk, period for full benefit of anti-depressant to kick in. I don't mean to quote you a cliche', but "Please Remember Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem". You've already taken an important step you are seeing a Mental Health Professional for your on anti-depressant. You get a standing Ovation from me for this, now just don't give up. You've taken the biggest step, now keep stepping until you find the medication/therapy combo that works for you. Once again you will not worry and be happy! Just give it some time. I hope this has helped and I appreciate the opportunity to address such a well written question.

They can. Anti-depressants can go both ways, they're supposed to make it better but sometimes they do the opposite. Different brands vary though, so it's sometimes about "trial and error." Not all anti-depressants have the same affect on all people, and he may need to try a different brand- he should bring that up with the doctor too and not just wait this out. It takes 7 to 21 days to begin to feel the affects of the medicine, and likewise it takes that long for it to leave your system But it's been three weeks so he's hit the point where he should be able to say "yes" or "no" to what he is taking.

The best cure for depression is to cheer somebody else up. Make someone laugh. Give what you need. Also try meditation. Choose to be happy, and eat right. As for Prozac, here is a simple test you can use... if some particular molecule never existed on planet earth before humans started messing with chemistry ... then DON'T EAT IT. ( duh! ) Get all the drugs and man-made chemicals out of your system. And then walk. Laugh. Dance. Get outdoors in the sunshine and fresh air. Eat well. Choose happiness. And think about helping others.

I know exactly what your going through. I was diagnosed with depression about 11 years ago,and nothing and I mean nothing could make me happy. I used to take Prozac. I used to take alot of meds. The one med that really started helping me about 2 years ago is called Lexapro. When you feel suicidal and you think that there is no hope call someone. A friend, relative, just someone who you can trust and who you can talk to. Good Luck and God Bless.

Their are many Anti-depressant on the market natural ones tend to have less side affects.
But you really need to find out why you are depressed in the first place. Diet and exercise can help the body if you are not eating properly this can have an affect on you your first course of action is to see you family doctor and tell him if you have no joy then looking into alternative medicine like Relagen

Hi Rolando. Do not feel desperate. Breath deep many times. You are not alone!. There are millions of people in the world going through the same thing. I suffer from depression. Years ago I took Prozac and since it made me nervous the doctor combined it with a sedative given to epileptics called Rivotril.
Right now I am on Cymbalta and Zyprexa. They are really good meds, they reduced my symptoms almost to cero. Please ask your doctor about this new meds (they are the New Generation of meds, Prozac is kind of old). Good Luck. If you need anything else please contact me to this e.mail Argentox2@yahoo.com

I hope to god that no one thinks that I am heartless when I say this but what did people do 1000 years ago for depression, they didnt have meds.. I think you need to take a DEEP look at what bothers you and makes you feel this way.. is it SOMEONE in your life? Is it SOMETHING in your life? Childhood past? Whatever it is you NEED to fid out what the actaul DEAL is and confront it. If its a deadbeat boy/girlfriend? Find the strength give them up.... if its childhood situation then you need to confront the problem either that or look past it and realize that you are no longer a child and youa re in control of youor future... hopefully there is one, noone deserves to feel the way that you do, a feeling is a feeling and everyone has them, dont let it consume you! I wish you the best of luck!!!

There are quite a few good anti-depressents out there, Zoloft, Paxil, Effexor, etc.
Your best option is to consult with your doctor, and see what he/she wants to put you on next. That's the person that will know your medical history well enough to make an education decision.
Realize not everyone's body reacts to these drugs the same. I had to go through Zoloft, Paxil, and finally Effexor til I found one that worked on me.
Good luck.

Celexa AND Wellbutrin at the same time!!! The reason is...
I have tried Paxil and Prozac before (not at the same time), and the Paxil made me a zombie and the Prozac made me want to die or kill myself. Celexa is the 1st one I've found where I actually feel normal. I wasn't too sleepy feeling, and I felt somewhat stable. After taking it awhile though, I noticed I had less and less energy. My dr. said that can happen once your body gets used to it, and since it deals with serotonin amounts in your body, it depletes our natural dopamine levels. Dopamine is what makes us happy, excited, energetic. Wellbutrin increases dopamine levels. So, I started taking both, and wow...It's wonderful. I really feel 'normal' now. Not too sleepy, too hyper, too angry...I feel my feelings in a seemingly 'normal' way. I'd recommend you try the combo, or talk to your dr. about it.

prozac is called an SSRI (selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor), and is just like lexapro, celexa, zoloft, and paxil. i would try another SSRI, because cross-allergies aren' very common with them. you could also try drugs that work differently like effexor or cymbalta. also realize antidepressants take up to 4 weeks for maximum effect, so until you hit that point, you won't know how well it will work for you. also, depression is usually treated for 6 months the first time you have it, then the medicine should try and be tapered off. there are other options other than drugs like counseling that could help. whichever you prefer, use your doctor and pharmacist to help. Good Luck. God Bless.
