Why is lamb so expensive? not so long ago beef was much more exspensive than lamb. And please spare me the BSE excuse, that has cleared up long ago and people have no fear buying beef.
There is no rush on lamb any longer, so why oh why is it so b****y expensive.

it all started with with BSE because of the shortage of beef, lamb prices rose because of market forces (Supply and Demand)
however the price of Lamb has continued to remain high I believe because of the marketing strategies of the supermarket chains.
Supermarkets pay much less for their products because of their buying power.
they do not pass these savings onto the consumer and make high profit margins.
the independent Butchers are force to pay higher prices and then add their own much smaller mark-up..Result expensive Lamb.
we as consumers are being fleeced(pun intended)in yet another example of RIP-OFF Britain.....

just to stir things up a bit.....Sheep have been suffering from a similar desease to BSE for many many years its called Scrapie..and yet you are never warned about MAD SHEEP DESEASE..........

What a coincidence - I asked this question today of a butcher and he said it is because the amount of useable meat off lamb is quite small compared with pigs and beef cattle, and the availability of lambs is much lower, too. So I guess it's down to the usual 'supply and demand' factor.

Because many farmers are giving up keeping sheep due to poor returns, with fewer farmers producing lambs, fewer lambs available, supply and demand push up the price. Blame the big retailers for this, they pay farmers as little as they can for the best quality produce, farmers can't survive so diversify

Just a comment in passing - there's nothing on a lamb to compete with what the pig has to offer: spare rib chops, back bacon, fillet, leg, ... forget lamb, enjoy pork, it would be preferable even at the same price - but it's less.

i think the main reason is that most of the lamb is exported, mainly to France where a much higher price can be obtained resulting in higher prices been demanded at home
