Dear Secular-
Yes Adam and Eve actually existed.
There is no conclusive evidence that the earth is older than 6000 years, or that we evolved from goo. Evolution is a theory. Folks have been piecing together bits and pieces of stuff saying that it proves it is true. Many evolutionists have more faith than Christians, because it takes a lot of faith to believe what they are selling.
A large number of reputable scientists cannot in good conscience agree with an unprovable theory. All they can say is what they see that there is an intelligent design.
The bible is the Holy Word of God, it is true. It has proved itself to be true through prophecy etc....
Do the research, ask questions, check answers against the turth of God's Word. Here is a web site that is helpful in answering the question "How do we know the bible is true".
http://www.christiananswers.net/q-eden/edn-t003.html
I hope this answers your question. Have a good day.

since youre asking christians, the answer will be yes. if you look at facts and unbiased sources, you might get a different answer
you are right about the effect adam and eve not existing would have on the foundation of christianity. the genesis story establishes these fundamental points:
1. God is totally powerful
2. man is sinful and needs to be redeemed
if adam and eve and eden never actually existed, then this foundation is instantly destroyed and christianity has no basis whatsoever.

Adam and Eve did exist. They were not however the only humans at the time. The "original sin" was committed, but that has nothing to do with Jesus. Jesus was 1000's perhaps 10's of thousands of years later. Moses wrote Genesis in about 1500 BC, through the hand of God. So we don't have scientific evidence of Adam and Eve, but by faith we know that they existed. Back to Jesus. Jesus died for the sins of all people from the day he was crucified on up to the present. The bible doesn't indicate that he died for sins of the past.

The answer to this question (which isn't a question so much as you trying to make a claim) is in your anthropology. I am a Christian that believes in Intelligent Design (a.k.a. "Old Earth" Creation. Yes, the earth is about 4.5 billion years old, but God directed the growth), yet also understands the depravity of humans. "Original Sin" as YOU understand it isn't a doctrine that all churches hold to. However, all TRULY Christian belief systems hold to the Depravity of Man. This means that humans have a flaw, or a pollution. This is the fault of mankind, not God. As man first grew outside of limited comprehension of good and evil (above that of the common beast), he immediatly went towards the wrong side. It's due to the inherent self-serving mentality of humans. Only with God's help can we truly overcome this flaw, because the human nature in us always wants to serve ourselves. Many attempts are made, and we even do seemingly altruistic things in a self-serving attempt at covering up our inherently selfish nature.
Now, this won't convince you unless you are truly willing to look outside of your own perspective, but that's normal. Christ's atoning sacrifice isn't just one that repays the debt of the first person that sinned, but one that repairs the damage that has existed as long as man (as we know him to exist) has been around. So, Christ's sacrifice was needed for the Primary Sin Nature, or simply put, Original Sin.
To HD1: Chirst's sacrifice was Eternal, therefore it was one made for Moses, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Job, Jonah, and the whole list. All true Hebrew believers before Christ had some understanding of the Messiah. God revealed more and more (the concept known as Progressive Revelation), until His revelation of the Messiah was complete in the ressurection. While Abraham didn't know about Jesus the man, he knew that God was going to send Himself in an atoning way.

The earth is 6000 years old. It was created from matter already in existence. You have no fact of man evolving. Where is the proof? I bet you can't find one bit of evidence that can conclusively say we evolved from an atom. Get your facts straight before you make claims like that. It makes you sound ignorant (which you may be, but that's not the argument). Adam and Eve did physically exist. Christ didn't just come to earth to die for that sin, he did for all sins and all sinners (all of us). You must have talked to some one that is misinformed or you need to do more research into the christian beliefs.

I think the story of Adam and Eve is just that; a story. One of the many things in the bible that should be open for interpretation- not taken literally.
And quoting the bible is not "proof" of their existence. It's "proof" that someone way back when had a very vivid imagination. Think about it; how many times has the bible been re-written? How many different versions of the bible are there? You think for one moment that people haven't put their own spin on things over the years. Come on, be serious.

Mitochondrial Eve:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitochondrial_Eve
quote:
==========================
Mitochondrial Eve (mt-mrca) is the name given by researchers to the woman who is the matrilineal most recent common ancestor for all living humans; the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in all living humans is derived from hers. Mitochondrial Eve is the female counterpart of the Y-chromosomal Adam, the patrilineal most recent common ancestor.
The holder of this title is believed by some to have lived about 150,000 years ago in what is now Ethiopia, Kenya or Tanzania. The time she lived is calculated based on the molecular clock technique of correlating elapsed time with observed genetic drift.

At some point in the past, a naked ape walked out onto the savannah and raising her face to the sun, went: "Oook, ooh, ooo."
And God zapped her with an immortal soul and she became human. So all her descendants would know, He gave her a special sign. It's called mitochondrial DNA and we don't share our type with ANY OTHER SPECIES, including the rest of the primates. Call her Eve. Her son would be Adam.
At some point in time after this, one or more of these newly ensouled humans sc****d up really bad. How we do not know. When we do not know. But they did and Original Sin came into the world.
So Jesus came also in the fullness of God's time to save us from our positively preternatural stupidity. And here we are today, wasting time trying to pinpoint the details when the correct course of action is to grow in the Spirit God sent us and fit ourselves for going Home to Him.

It would be a fabrication if they never existed, but you base your argument on many preconceived statements. There are still different views on all of the "facts" that you are giving. There is no proof that the story of creation is a fabrication,.....this is your belief.
The reverse can be argued if Adam and Eve existed.

Why do you ask a question, if you already "know" the answer? The truth is that evolution was never proven, and truth be told, all "evidence" of evolution has been proven to be a fraud. But nobody pays attention that the real evidence because it goes against the idea of trying to disprove God.
In answer to your question, yes, Adam and Eve did exist.
