You always need space.
I work away at sea and call home every day. Sometimes we talk for an hour and it seems like just a few minutes. Other times I am tired, or she is tired, or we genuinely do not have much to talk about. It happens - and it does not signify the end of the relationship - just that we have no need to say too much that particular night. No harm done
We always end the conversation nicely (love you, home soon etc), no matter how long or short the talk has been.
Why keep the conversation going just for the sake of it? There is no need.

There are such things as 'comfortable silences', that's true, but only with the right person. As Mia says to Vincent in Pulp Fiction: 'They say that's how you know when you've met your soul mate - when you can just shut the f*ck up and enjoy the silence together.'
Doesn't really work over the phone, though. People seem embarrassed about having nothing to say, but the best policy is to just be honest. Simply say something like "I;ve got nothing to say ... I hate that, don't you?"
You'll probably find your bf is struggling just the same and would welcome an ice-breaker like that.

YES THERE IS ALWAYS RUNNING OUT OF TOPICS...USUALLY HOW THERE DAY WAS FOLLOWED BY YOURS PLANS FOR THE NIGHT/WEEKEND. ANYTHING EXCITING HAPPENING DURING THE DAY. CURRENT EVENTS PEOPLE YOU RAN INTO THERE IS TONS OF CONVERSATION STARTERS USUALLY THE CONVERSATION FLOWS BETTER IF YOU DON'T ASK YES OR NO QUESTIONS THAT WAY THE CONVERSATION CAN LAST AND USUALLY SOMETHING THEY SAY IN A SENTENCE TRIGGERS SOMETHING ELSE TO TALK ABOUT INSTEAD OF YES OR NO ANSWERS, THEY KILL THE CONVERSATION.

me and my bf have run up huge phone bills talking about absolute twoddle!! buts its great LOL. you dont need to "pick" a subject to talk about it just kinda happens and that subjects leads to more that lead to more and voila before you know it youve been on the phone for two hours. its even worse when we are together we talk about any and every thing, but at least we dont run up bills then!!
every day is different so you always have something different to talk about....if you have trouble talking to your bf then maybe he isnt right for you?

Just say something completely random, that's what I used to do, always got the conversation going again. Sounds weird but it works and sometimes funny especially if you say something funny.

there aren't many guys who are good at talking on the phone... yours may be one of them, so if the conversation drys up, make your excuses and end the phonecall. he'll soon get the message and start to make more of an effort.
