It is going to be a while before we know for sure just how good or bad he performs, but what do you think?? What about the fact that he is a close family friend of the Bush clan?

You can never predict these things. When Aspin (a highly regarded head of the House Armed Services Committee) was appointed as Secretary of Defense I thought that he was a good choice. It turned out that he was not up to the challenge of actually running the DOD.

BTW - he did not resign because of the election results. The most probable reason was the editorials in the military newspapers that showed that he had lost the confidence of the military leadership.

Rumsfield's biggest failing was the fact that he was too smart. As a result he thought that he knew better than everyone else. This was perceived as arrogance.

As a result of his attempting to implement 'new strategies' he sent too few soldiers into Iraq in the very beginning. He felt that we could do the job with fewer soldiers by being faster, better trained and better able to adapt to a changing battlefield. This would have worked fine if Iraqi society had not collapsed - thus leaving the country without police, or any government services. Without a large number of troops to fill in the gap - the civil society of Iraq collapsed and we are still putting the country back together.

i think rumsfeld tried to run things.he wouldn't listen to anyones point of view. gates will probably just be a puppet for bush since he is a close family friend. in the end it will all topple down and we will be free of wars of retribution
