As others have mentioned, this verse refers to those people who were going astray after they were shown the straight path. So Allah revealed this verse, meaning that if you are indeed truthful, then you would hope for death so that you await your destiny.
But those who are wrong doers would never long for death as they fear the punishment that awaits them.
Longing for death does not mean committing suicide by the way but it just means that if a person is good then he would prefer to die in a state of piety rather than after doing bad deeds.

It depends on the interpretation that you give to "long for death." If you mean covet it, want to obtain it then I see your point. Think of it another way though, if you interpret it to mean, work towards it (not in an immediate way cause suicide is a sin) but to spend our lives doing good, working towards that reward of heaven. Heaven will be a good place, there will be no evil, no disease, no wars, no sin, doesn't that sound like a place that you are eager to inhabit?
We spend our lives working at a job for rewards like our paycheck, vacations etc. What about the time that we spend working towards our rewards in heaven, should we not be eager to receive those too?

I do not see it that way. The way I see it like this: I used to be afraid of death now that I found Islam I know that it depends on me. You need to try your best here be good follow God, before you can even see paradise ... you know...

LET ME TELL YOU THE DETAIL ANSWER...
IN THIS AYAT THE MESSAGE IS NOT TO MUSLIMS ... THIS MESSAGE IS TO ISRAELS...THIS AYAT WAS PRESENTED TO MOHAMMED(PBUH) BY ALLAH WHEN MOHAMMED(PBUH) CAME TO TELL ISRAELS TO OBEY ALLAH'S DUTY AND TO ACCEPT HIM AS THEIR GOD...BUT ISRAELS IGNORE WHT PROPHET SAID AND GAVE HIM IN THE ANSWER QURAN(2:91)"AND WHEN WE SAID WHATEVER IS PRESENTED TO U BY ALLAH BELIEVE ON IT THEN THEY SAY"WE ONLY BELIEVE ON THOSE THINGS WHICH WERE PRESENTED BETWEEN US(MEANS BETWEEN ISRAELI GENERATION)AND WHATEVER IS OUT OF OUR GENERATION WE WILL NOT ACCEPT IT,THEY REFUSE TO BELEIVE IT,INFACT IT IS THAT TRUTH AND GIVING THEM THE KNOWLEDGE WHICH WAS ALREADY PRESENTED TO THEM"
THEY WERE IGNORING PROPHET MOHAMMED(PBUH) BECOZE HE WAS NOT SENT FOR THEIR GENERATION ONLY HE WAS SENT FOR THE WHOLE MAN KIND...BEFORE OUR LAST PROPHET MANY PROPHETS WERE SENT BUT FOR ISRAELI GENERATION...
THE AYAT U HAVE WROTE WAS FOR ISRAELI AS THEY THINK THAT HEREAFTER IS ONLY RESERVED FOR THEM...SO ALLAH(SWT)SAY THEM TO ASK DEATH IF U R TRUTHFULL THEN HE ALSO SAY QURAN(2:95)"AND BELIEVE IT THEY WILL NEVER ASK DEATH,BECOZE WHATEVER THEY HAVE DONE FROM THEIR HANDS(MEANS THEIR DEEDS)THE RESULT IS THT(THEY BETTER NOT ASK FOR DEATH)AND ALLAH KNOWS WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO CRUEL PEOPLE(IN THE HEREAFTER)"

Well let's face it, ALL books of mythology exaggerate. It's what they do after all.
It makes the sheep feel better about handing over thier money for no good reason whatsoever.
