Joshua was 40 years old when Moses sent him to spy out Canaan (Joshua 14:7). Jesus was in the wilderness tempted of the devil for forty days and nights (Mark 1:13; Luke 4:2). David reigned over Israel 40 years (1 Kings 2:11). Solomon reigned over Israel 40 years (1 Kings 11:42). Othniel was a judge over Israel for 40 years (Judges 3:11).

Does the number 40 have any spiritual meaning??

40 is often understood as the “number of probation or trial.” For example: the Israelites wandered for 40 years (Deuteronomy 8:2-5); Moses was on the mount for 40 days (Exodus 24:18); 40 days were involved in the story of Jonah and Nineveh (Jonah 3:4); Jesus was tempted for 40 days (Matthew 4:2); there were 40 days between Jesus’ resurrection and ascension (Acts 1:3).

As much as a guide book, the bible is an enigma. Numerology(sic) isn't something I think we should focus on. There are all these numbers that may have significance- 3, 7, 12, 40...., but I think it will only be clear in the end.
