Call the police or state troopers where you are at right now - you don't have to give your name , just ask a general question and let them know you want to abide by the law. You didn't mention when your tags expired , but i assume that if it's been very recently , you may just get a warning anyway. If it's been a while - then it may be more complicated, especially if you get a ticket before you re-register the plates. What the DMV / revenue office, etc. usually does is ask if you got caught driving with expired tags or had a ticket. You may have to pay a small penalty - but don't lie , they make you fill out an affadavit and when they run a vehicle check you may get in more trouble. Ask the local authorities though like i said, after all , you are not the first one to go through this.

Well, if you do get pulled over out of state, you may find your car impounded. If you have a clean record, the cop may decide to give you a break.

Best solution? Don't drive it till it is legal, which is probably not convenient. Let's face it; your car may be impounde in your own state for the same offense. In Florida, you can register by mail, possibly by computer. Another possibility may be to buy a temporary tag in the state.

Good luck. Been there, & so far been lucky.

You can just get a citation, the ting to tell them would be that you applied for it and you do not have it with you because it is getting mailed to your home. The Secretary of state is so slow that it won't be entered for a while.
