If you go to www.dmv.org you can click on the state of Utah and get all the details of the information you are both looking for.

There are portions of both of your viewpoints that are correct, there are more details needed regarding state and local regulations. You do need to take a road test, have drivers ed., and have 40 hours of driving time including six hours of driving time after dark.

The licensed adult driver who participates in this time with you actually has to sign a document affirming that you have completed this time.

If you both check out this website you will find all the information you will need to become responsible drivers. Have a good day!

In Ohio you have to take both the driver's ed classes and the mandatory 50 hours with the parents if you are under the age of 18 as well as a learning permit of course. I am going to assume that it is similar in Utah. All people under the age of 18 have to take drivers ed and do the extra hours with your parents, which has to be notarized. This is to give more teens practice behind the wheel. It is not driver's ed or 40 hours it is both. I know in Ohio that if you are over the age of 18 you don't have to do any of it.

If you want to know for certain contact your BMV they will tell you for certain.

I'm not sure how it is in Utah, and it's been year's since I got my license (I was 17 at the time). But...when I did, I had to do so many hours of drivers ed (I think it was 16 total classroom time and 16 driving time). The driving portion was done with an actual instructor. I drove with my parents for practice only...that did not count towards my actual drivers ed time.

In NYS you have to take drivers ed regardless of age, and then a drivers written test and finally a road test! You either "pass" or "fail"! Then you must retake only the road test until you aquire your drivers license!
