He is 7 months old and he pees like a female would...you know..he still squads down. My friend has a male dog and hers is 2 years old and still squads down and she said her vet told her that male dogs will do that until they mate. Is that necesarily true?

Dogs will do either depending on comfort level. I believe squatting versus lifting-a-leg has a lot to do with hip structure. If the dog's bones are more comfortable squatting, then that's what they'll do. Sometimes it may also have to do with the proportion between leg height and overall dog size. Now I haven't taken a scientific survey, but maybe short stature dogs like to squat since it's easier?

I had a female boxer who used to lift her leg and urinate like a male dog.
I wouldn't really worry about your male dog urinating like a female, especially if you trained him on puppy pads, because there is more direction and all the urine will stay on the pad.

Are you planning on mating your chihuahua? That isn't a good idea since there are already so many unwanted puppies in the world. Getting him neutured will prevent certain types of cancer and could prolong his life. Just love him as a member of your family.

That is absolutely false. I have owned male dogs for over 30 years and have had some lift their leg and some squat their entire lives. I've bred all of these dogs. I think it's more a comfort preference.

Consider it a blessing. Now you won't have that dog peeing on your bushes, thereby killing them.
Some dogs do that and I'm not entirely sure why. It really doesn't seem to be restricted to certain breeds either. Like the lady above said, it may be a comfort level for the animal.

Some male dogs are just that way and nothing may change it. It may have to do with testosterone but I doubt it. However its funny to think you would never see a female hike her leg, must be a double standard!

Hmm never heard of that before. I don't know of a male dog squating, but my friend has a female dog that cocks her leg (she copies the other dog).

It's relatively normal, and has nothing to do with not yet mating. There was actually a funny episode of Southpark, where Stan's dog squated to pee. His dog ended up being gay, so maybe that is something to consider.

I've never heard of that before. I've had more than a couple of male dogs that never mated and didn't squat to pee. One of my neighbors has a male boxer who squats and she just refers to it as a quirk.

Never heard that before. I have heard that some never lift their leg and others didn't until puberty. Also, one friend swore that their male dog squatted until he saw another male dog lift his leg and then he started lifting his leg too.

No, some females do elevate their legs & many adult males will squat. females have not something that appears like a penis. If that is a male, the penis is positioned on the tummy (abdomen). If that is a lady, the vulva is positioned on the bottom of the rectal section (the butt).
