A friend of mine uses apple brandy and then mulling spices. VERY tasty.

(As a side note, he heats the cider and spices on the stove and has the liquor set aside so people can have it spiked or plain - both are great!)

For mulled apple cider a good quality bourbon is best. The flavors work well together. Rum is good if you like very sweet drinks. Another option is to add Calvados (apple brandy), but most consider it a bit extravagant for a mulled cider.

It's my understanding that to truly be "mulled" it takes mulling spices that I have found in a surprising number of grocery stores during the winter months, and red wine. Using whiskey makes it "spiked", while "hard cider" is cider that has been fermented.

make something YOURSELF instead of going out and buying everything.

add 3 pounds of raw honey and 3 pounds of brown sugar under very low heat to 3 gallons of cider.
pour in carboy. add cider and top off with as little air in the carboy as possible (about 5 verticle inches)

ferment it for a week to two (less time if its more than 90 seconds between bubbles) with 2 packs of "red star" brand champagne yeast with a 3 piece beer airlock (not a 2 piece wine airlock)

follow beer instructions for bottling and priming..

apricot brandy is excellent in eggnog. even though I love rum and coke, I think the brandy is the right liquor for the eggnog I use one full shotglass of brandy to a glass of eggnog , if not strong enough add more brandy depending on the glass size

Usally a rum is the most popular and you can choose from light to dark rums for more intense flavor. You can use almost any whisky or brandy too if you choose.
