I am looking to paint the paneling in my house and I was told that it soaks up the paint quite a bit. Does anyone know the easiest and cheapest way to do this? I am on limited funds here. Thank you to all who give suggestions.

You must first paint on a primer paint. This will make the paint stick to the wall much better and prevent peeling. After it's dry paint on what ever type of paint you want...Keep in mind that a good quality paint covers better and is more durable to wash future stains off.

Primer would be the best way to go, but also more expensive. You could always by a cheap white to put on as a first coat, and then cover with the color you are changing too. I have always painted with a paint pad and disposable pan liner. Many people like the roller's, but I am lazy and don't want to put down plastic or tape off the edges. I have found if I use a paint pad and small brush, I can get in the corners and edges without having to do the extra work. Also with rollers you get a lot of spray and drips from them. The disposable pan liner usually costs less than a dollar, and makes clean up much easier. Do not add too much water to a latex based paint, it will take forever to dry and will really lower the paints covering capabilities.

Don't use water base paint on wood because it will peal off. Use a self sealing primer first, let it dry good for a couple of days, then apply the latex paint of your choice. For the larger part of the walls you can use a roller, then a brush to finish the top & bottom.

Try applying a sealant first. this will prevent the paint being sucked in too much.

Use a primer first, then paint over it - yes it's that simple!

Make sure you start with a good primer! Have the primer tinted to match your wall color - you will get much better results! Have fun.

for first coat mix paint 50/50 with water. could also spray it on if you're lucky enough to have the equipment. but then 2nd coat should go on fine.
